![]() Like the translators in Iraq not getting stateside like they were promised and that kid's dad dying because of it. You know, you laugh because the fucked up issues are presented in a funny way, but you get so angry that the horrible issues that are happening and that they're real. Colbert still is pretty funny at times, but neither are as consistently funny the entire show as Last Week Tonight.Īlso, the way it makes you feel inside. ![]() I feel that Colbert and The Daily Show used to be as funny. And still, this wouldn't quite be a fair comparison either. Perhaps a slighly better way to compare them would be to take 1 full week of Colbert's or Stewart's shows and to condense each week into a single half hour of only the best stuff. This comparison isn't really fair to Stewart and Colbert but that shouldn't obscure how good of a job that Oliver is doing. That said, John Oliver is really doing some great, great work. They do so much stuff and some of it is great. We all judge CNN fairly harshly for the garbage that they sometimes do, but this is just focusing on the bad. To take another example, one of the reasons that Cable news organizations like CNN are so ridiculed is because they have created this mandate for themselves to fill 24 hours a day with some kind of news content (including lifestyle/human interest type "infotainment" like Anthony Bourdain's show, etc.). The pressure to put out stuff day after day (4 days a week) will inherently make what you're doing not as great as it could be if you had the luxury to really refine your writing. Not only does Oliver get more time to prepare for each episode, but he has more topics to choose from. Newspapers have to pump stuff out everyday while magazine journalists have more time to go in-depth. It's like comparing the quality of daily newspaper articles to weekly magazine articles.
